Women's Wellness: A Holistic Approach to Mental, Physical, and Spiritual Health

By Heather Evans & Winslow Passey

What Is Holistic Women's Wellness?

Holistic wellness means treating the whole person — not just symptoms. For women, this means recognizing that mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual health are deeply interconnected.

When one energy is depleted, the others feel it. When one is restored, the others begin to shift too.

This is the foundation of Soul Sister Retreat's Four Energies framework.

The Four Energies of Women's Wellness

Mental Energy

Mental energy is about clarity, focus, and the stories you tell yourself.

Many women are not lacking capability — they're carrying limiting beliefs. They're waiting to be more qualified. They're measuring their lives against expectations they never chose.

How to support mental wellness:

  • Question old stories and choose new ones
  • Protect your mental clarity by limiting noise and comparison
  • Practice mindfulness to train your attention
  • Seek professional support when needed

Emotional Energy

Emotional energy is about having space to feel, process, and be witnessed.

Many women carry emotional weight quietly. They're the strong ones. The steady ones. But even strong women need somewhere to lay down what they've been carrying.

How to support emotional wellness:

  • Create space for honest emotional expression
  • Allow yourself to be witnessed by trusted people
  • Practice naming what you feel without judgment
  • Give yourself permission to rest, celebrate, grieve, and laugh

Physical Energy

Physical energy is about the body as part of the conversation.

Women often try to think their way into clarity while their bodies are exhausted. But the body knows. The body knows when we need rest, movement, breath, nourishment, and care.

How to support physical wellness:

  • Eat foods that nourish rather than deplete
  • Prioritize sleep as a non-negotiable
  • Move your body in ways that feel good, not punishing
  • Listen to your body's signals rather than overriding them
  • Remember that restoration is power, not weakness

Spiritual Energy

Spiritual energy is about meaning, purpose, and connection to something larger than yourself.

It's the part of us that asks: What am I being called toward? What am I ready to release? What would change if I trusted myself again?

How to support spiritual wellness:

  • Create space to listen to your inner voice
  • Spend time in nature to remember you're part of something bigger
  • Connect with community that supports your growth
  • Explore practices like journaling, meditation, and breathwork

How Do the Four Energies Work Together?

The four energies are not separate — they're a system. When you neglect one, the others compensate until they can't anymore.

For example:

  • When you're emotionally depleted, your mental clarity drops
  • When you're physically exhausted, your emotional resilience fades
  • When you're spiritually disconnected, everything feels harder
  • When your mind is cluttered, your body holds tension

This is why holistic wellness matters. You can't just exercise and eat well and expect to feel whole. You need all four energies to be nourished.

How to Start a Holistic Wellness Practice

Step 1: Check In Daily

Each morning, ask yourself:

  1. How is my Physical energy today?
  2. How is my Mental energy today?
  3. How is my Emotional energy today?
  4. How is my Spiritual energy today?

Step 2: Identify What's Depleted

Which energy is lowest? That's where to focus today.

Step 3: Take One Small Action

Choose one small action to replenish the depleted energy:

  • Physical: Take a walk, eat a nourishing meal, go to bed early
  • Mental: Journal, meditate, limit screen time
  • Emotional: Call a friend, write in a journal, allow yourself to cry
  • Spiritual: Spend time in nature, meditate, connect with community

Step 4: Repeat Daily

This daily check-in is built into The Freedom Practice™. Over five days, you'll develop the habit of noticing which energy needs attention — and knowing how to replenish it.
