Micro Retreat vs. Full Retreat: Which Is Right for You?

By Heather Evans & Winslow Passey

What Is a Micro Retreat?

A micro retreat is a short, structured practice that brings the essence of retreat into your daily life. Instead of traveling somewhere for days, you create a retreat-like experience in 5–15 minutes per day.

The Freedom Practice™ is an example of a micro retreat — five days of guided reflection, journaling, and intentional practices that take just minutes each day.

What Is a Full Retreat?

A full retreat is an immersive, multi-day experience where you step away from your daily life entirely. You travel to a new location, disconnect from routine, and spend several days focused entirely on reflection, connection, and transformation.

Soul Sister Retreat's October retreat in Zion National Park is a full retreat — 3 days of immersive programming with 12 women.

Micro Retreat vs. Full Retreat: Key Differences

Time Commitment

  • Micro retreat: 5–15 minutes per day, from home
  • Full retreat: 3–7 days, away from home

Depth of Transformation

  • Micro retreat: Gradual, cumulative shifts through daily practice
  • Full retreat: Deep, immediate transformation through immersion

Cost

  • Micro retreat: Free or low cost
  • Full retreat: Significant investment ($1,500–$5,000+)

Accessibility

  • Micro retreat: Available to anyone, anytime
  • Full retreat: Requires scheduling, travel, and preparation

Community

  • Micro retreat: Self-guided (or online community)
  • Full retreat: Deep in-person bonds with a small group

Which Is Right for You?

Choose a Micro Retreat If:

  • You can't take time away right now
  • You want to build daily wellness habits
  • You're curious about retreat practices but not ready for a full retreat
  • You want to prepare for a future full retreat
  • You need something free or low-cost

Choose a Full Retreat If:

  • You feel called to step away from daily life
  • You want deep, immersive transformation
  • You're ready to invest in yourself
  • You crave in-person community with other women
  • You want guidance from experienced facilitators

Choose Both If:

Many women benefit from both. Start with a micro retreat like The Freedom Practice to build daily awareness, then attend a full retreat when you're ready for deeper immersion. After the full retreat, return to the micro retreat practices to integrate what you learned.

Can a Micro Retreat Replace a Full Retreat?

Not exactly. They serve different purposes. A micro retreat builds the daily muscle of intentional living. A full retreat creates the space for breakthrough transformation.

But a micro retreat can absolutely create meaningful change on its own. Many women find that 5 days of The Freedom Practice shifts their perspective more than they expected.

Start Where You Are

If you're not sure which to choose, start with The Freedom Practice — it's free, takes 5 minutes a day, and will help you discover whether a full retreat is right for you.
