The Four Energies: How to Balance Physical, Mental, Emotional, and Spiritual Wellbeing

By Heather Evans & Winslow Passey

What Are The Four Energies?

At the heart of Soul Sister Retreat is the belief that women need to restore and strengthen four essential energies: mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual energy.

These are not separate parts of who you are. They are deeply connected. When one is depleted, the others feel it. When one is restored, the others begin to shift too.

Why Do The Four Energies Matter?

Many women are living full lives, but not always fulfilled lives. They are leading teams, raising families, caring for others, building careers, and quietly wondering when they will get to come up for air.

They are capable. They are strong. They are resilient. And many of them are exhausted.

The Four Energies framework helps you identify which area of your wellbeing needs attention, so you can replenish it with intention rather than pushing through.

Mental Energy: The Stories You Tell Yourself

Mental energy is about the stories we believe, the thoughts we repeat, the clarity we protect, and the narratives we allow to shape our lives.

So many women are not lacking capability. They are carrying limiting beliefs — waiting to be more qualified, letting someone else determine their readiness, or measuring their lives against expectations they never consciously chose.

How to restore mental energy:

  • Question old stories and choose new ones
  • Ask yourself: What if I am ready enough to begin?
  • Protect your mental clarity by limiting noise and comparison
  • Choose thoughts that serve your growth, not your fear

Emotional Energy: The Space to Feel

Emotional energy is about having space to feel, process, celebrate, release, and be witnessed.

Many women carry emotional weight quietly. They are the strong ones. The steady ones. The ones others call when something needs to be handled. But even strong women need somewhere to lay down what they have been carrying.

How to restore emotional energy:

  • Create space to be honest about what is real — without judgment
  • Allow yourself to be witnessed by trusted people
  • Practice naming what you feel without trying to fix it
  • Give yourself permission to rest, celebrate, grieve, and laugh

Physical Energy: Listening to Your Body

Physical energy is about the body as part of the conversation.

Women often try to think their way into clarity while their bodies are exhausted. We push through fatigue. We override signals. We normalize stress. We disconnect from the wisdom our bodies are constantly offering.

But the body knows. The body knows when we need rest, movement, breath, nourishment, and care.

How to restore physical energy:

  • Come back into relationship with your body through movement and nature
  • Eat foods that nourish rather than deplete
  • Prioritize sleep as a non-negotiable
  • Remember that restoration is not weakness — it is power

Spiritual Energy: Meaning and Purpose

Spiritual energy is about meaning, purpose, inner knowing, values, joy, and connection to something larger than ourselves.

It is the part of us that asks: What am I being called toward? What am I ready to release? What would change if I trusted myself again?

How to restore spiritual energy:

  • Create enough space to listen to your inner voice
  • Spend time in nature to remember you are part of something bigger
  • Connect with community that supports your growth
  • Explore practices like journaling, meditation, and breathwork

How to Use The Four Energies Check-In

Each day in The Freedom Practice includes a Four Energies check-in. Simply ask yourself:

  1. How is my Physical energy today?
  2. How is my Mental energy today?
  3. How is my Emotional energy today?
  4. How is my Spiritual energy today?

Identify which energy is most depleted, and choose one small action to replenish it. This daily practice creates awareness that leads to lasting change.
