Are You Living Someone Else's Story?

By Heather Evans

When we are children, people often ask us,

"What do you want to be when you grow up?"

Somewhere along the way, the question changes.

"What should I do?" "What makes sense?" "What will make other people proud?" "What pays the bills?" "What does success look like?"

Without realizing it, many of us stop writing our own story.

Instead, we begin editing ourselves to fit someone else's.

Not because anyone intended to limit us.

Because we naturally learn from the people and culture around us.

Our families. Our communities. Our workplaces. Our traditions. Our experiences.

Little by little, we begin living according to expectations we never stopped to question.

At Soul Sister, we believe one of the greatest acts of freedom is having the courage to ask:

"Whose story am I living?"

Stories Are Given Before They're Chosen

Long before we understand the world, we begin absorbing it.

We learn what success looks like. What strength looks like. What love looks like. What achievement deserves recognition. What is expected of women. What is expected of leaders. What is expected of mothers.

Some of those stories become beautiful foundations.

Others quietly become invisible rules.

Rules like:

  • "Always put everyone else first."
  • "Don't disappoint people."
  • "Stay busy."
  • "Work harder."
  • "Don't make waves."
  • "Be grateful for what you have."

None of these are inherently wrong.

But every story deserves to be examined.

Because not every story is meant to become your life story.

Inherited Stories™

Not every story we live is one we consciously chose. Some are inherited — from family, culture, workplaces, past experiences, or societal expectations.

Naming that concept gives us language for something we've often felt but couldn't articulate.

Throughout the Soul Sister Freedom Library, you'll find a progression that helps you move from unconscious to intentional:

  1. Inherited Stories™ — The stories you absorbed.
  2. Limiting Stories™ — The stories that no longer serve you.
  3. Empowering Stories™ — The stories rooted in truth.
  4. Living Your Story™ — The intentional choices that reflect your authentic identity.

That's the Soul Sister approach to story — both a lens for understanding the past and a tool for creating the future.

Success Can Hide Misalignment

One of the hardest things about living someone else's story is that it can look incredibly successful.

You can receive promotions. Build a beautiful home. Raise an amazing family. Earn respect. Reach goals you once dreamed about.

And still feel disconnected.

Why?

Because achievement and alignment are not the same thing.

You can accomplish everything the world celebrates while quietly wondering,

"Why doesn't this feel like me?"

That question isn't failure.

It's awareness.

And awareness is where transformation begins.

The Difference Between Expectations and Identity

Expectations are external.

Identity is internal.

Expectations ask, "What should I do?"

Identity asks, "Who am I?"

Expectations often lead us toward approval.

Identity leads us toward authenticity.

The more we confuse expectations with identity, the easier it becomes to lose ourselves.

The more we reconnect with who we truly are, the easier it becomes to make choices that feel aligned.

That is why Authentic Identity™ is at the center of the Soul Sister Ecosystem.

When you know who you are, your life begins to reflect it.

Your Story Is More Than What Happened

Many people think their story is simply a collection of events.

At Soul Sister, we see story differently.

Your story is the meaning you've given those events.

It's how you've interpreted your experiences. How you've understood your gifts. How you've discovered your purpose. How you've come to believe what is possible.

Story shapes belief.

Belief shapes mindset.

Mindset shapes perspective.

Perspective shapes choice.

Choice shapes life.

That's why changing your story changes so much more than your thinking.

It changes your future.

Coming Home to Yourself

Living your own story doesn't mean rejecting everyone else's wisdom.

It means discerning what is true for you.

It means honoring your values. Recognizing your gifts. Trusting your intuition. Listening to the quiet voice that has always been within you.

The goal isn't independence.

The goal is authenticity.

At Soul Sister, we call this coming home to yourself.

Not becoming someone different.

Remembering who you've always been.

Nature Never Tries to Be Something Else

One of the reasons nature inspires us is because everything grows according to its own design.

An oak tree doesn't try to become a wildflower.

A river doesn't compare itself to the mountain.

Each fulfills its own purpose. Each contributes in its own way.

Imagine if we gave ourselves that same permission.

To stop comparing. To stop performing. To stop measuring our worth against someone else's journey.

Nature reminds us that flourishing begins when we embrace our own design.

Perhaps we were created to live that way too.

Freedom Is Choosing Your Story

Freedom isn't found by abandoning your responsibilities.

It's found by living them with intention.

It's choosing relationships that reflect your values. Work that reflects your gifts. Boundaries that honor your well-being. Dreams that belong to you.

You don't need permission to begin writing the next chapter of your life.

You only need the courage to pick up the pen.

Reflection

Take a quiet moment and ask yourself:

  • What expectations have shaped my life?
  • Which of those still reflect who I am?
  • Which ones no longer serve me?
  • When do I feel most like myself?
  • What dream have I quietly set aside?
  • What would change if I gave myself permission to write the next chapter?

Your past may be part of your story. It doesn't have to write your future.
