The Stories That Keep Us Stuck

By Heather Evans

The Story Isn't the Problem. The Meaning We Give It Is.

"The stories we believe shape the lives we create."

Have you ever caught yourself saying…

  • "I'm just not confident."
  • "This is just who I am."
  • "It's too late for me."
  • "I'm not creative."
  • "I'm always the one who has to hold everything together."

Most of us don't think of these as stories.

We think of them as facts.

But what if they're not?

What if they're simply interpretations we've carried for so long that they've begun to feel true?

At Soul Sister, we believe one of the greatest barriers to freedom isn't what has happened to us.

It's the story we've created about what happened.

Every Experience Has Two Parts

Every experience in life has two parts.

The event.

And the meaning we give it.

The event is real.

The meaning is the story.

Two people can experience the exact same situation and walk away with completely different stories.

One setback becomes proof that "I'm not good enough."

Another becomes evidence that "I'm stronger than I realized."

The event may be the same.

The story is different.

And that story begins shaping how we see ourselves, others, and what's possible.

Stories Become Beliefs

At first, a story is simply a thought.

If we repeat it often enough...

It becomes a belief.

Story → Belief → Mindset → Perspective → Choice → Life

Beliefs shape our mindset.

Our mindset influences our perspective.

Our perspective guides our choices.

Our choices become our habits.

Our habits become our lives.

This is why stories matter so much.

They quietly become the architecture of the life we're living.

The Stories Women Carry

Many of the women we meet aren't struggling because they lack ability.

They're carrying stories they never chose.

Stories like:

  • "I have to earn my worth."
  • "I can't disappoint people."
  • "I should be able to do it all."
  • "If I slow down, I'm failing."
  • "My needs come last."
  • "It's selfish to put myself first."
  • "I'm too much."
  • "I'm not enough."

Maybe you've never said those exact words.

But perhaps you've felt them.

The most powerful stories are often the ones we don't even realize we're living.

The Stories That Once Protected Us

Here's something important.

Not every limiting story began as a limitation.

Many began as protection.

Perhaps becoming the responsible one helped you survive a difficult season.

Perhaps perfection helped you earn approval.

Perhaps staying quiet helped you avoid conflict.

Those stories may have served an important purpose.

The question isn't whether they were right or wrong.

The question is...

Do they still serve the woman you're becoming?

Awareness Creates Choice

One of the most powerful moments in personal growth isn't changing a story.

It's noticing it.

Because the moment you recognize a story...

You realize you have a choice.

You can continue living it.

Or you can begin writing a new one.

That's why the Soul Sister Transformation Model™ begins with Clarity.

Not action.

Not goals.

Awareness.

Because we can't change what we cannot see.

What Is True?

After awareness comes another important question.

What is true?

Not... What have I always believed?

Not... What have other people told me?

But... What is true about me?

Perhaps it's true that you're resilient.

Perhaps it's true that you've overcome more than you realize.

Perhaps it's true that your gifts have been there all along.

Perhaps it's true that your worth has never depended on your performance.

Truth has a remarkable way of creating freedom.

You Don't Need a New Life

Many women think they need to change everything.

A different job.

A different relationship.

A different city.

Sometimes change is necessary.

But often...

The first thing that needs to change is the story.

Because when the story changes...

The possibilities change.

The choices change.

And eventually...

Life changes.

A New Story Begins with One Question

Imagine asking yourself...

  • What if the story I've been telling myself isn't the only story available?
  • What if this experience has revealed strengths I haven't yet recognized?
  • What if this season is preparing me instead of punishing me?
  • What if I'm not behind?
  • What if I'm becoming?

Those questions don't ignore reality.

They expand possibility.

Freedom Begins Here

At Soul Sister, we believe freedom begins the moment we stop allowing old stories to define our future.

Not by pretending the past didn't happen.

But by choosing the meaning we want to carry forward.

Because while we can't always choose what happens to us...

We can choose the story we write next.

And every new story begins with one intentional choice.

Reflection

Take a moment to pause and reflect.

Ask yourself:

  1. What story have I been telling myself lately?
  2. Where did that story begin?
  3. Has it protected me?
  4. Is it still serving me?
  5. What is true?
  6. What story do I want to begin living instead?

Awareness is the first step toward freedom.
